“If I gave you $1,000,000.00, what would you do with the money?”
That was a question that was asked me by a man after a short discussion about my startup business in business meeting with my good friend Jimmy Graham, former Navy SEAL and Director and Lead Instructor at ASRTrainingCenter.com.
I had heard the question before and had not though much about it, but had tossed around the question a few times, but never really coming up with an answer. So I told him.
“I’d give it back!”
Shocked and stunned, he looked at me, because probably no one has “refused” his “gift” or investment, and said, “Why?”
“Because I’m not ready to handle that amount of money for two reasons. One, not only because my business is not there, i.e. I’m not earning that amount of money, but second, because on a personal level I have not reached the level of maturity to handle that amount of money!”
He smiled at me and Jimmy and then went back to asking more questions and taking notes.
But his question and my impromptu answer stuck in my mind thereafter.
Money, money, money
After being asked that question, I decided to ask other Christians the same question. Here are some of the responses:
- “I’d pay off all of my bills and put the rest away in investments”
- “I have a business, so I’d buy a building and equipment so I can hire others to build products to sell.”
- “I’d give some to my kids and then take a long needed vacation.”
- “I’d give God His 10 percent, pay off bills, pay off my house, and then retire.”
- “I’d buy a house, new cars, new clothes,….”
You can guess from the tone and answers that the last answer would pretty much be a similar to all of the rest of the answers to my question.
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over….
…and expecting different results!
Yep, notice all of the answers that I was given, and am still given today, all revolve around being a consumer, even the person with a business acted like a consumer. “I’d buy….”
But it is God who puts the proper perspective we’re to have:
Prov 24:27 Prepare your work outside, And make it ready for yourself in the field; Afterwards, then, build your house.
Prov 24:27 [Put first things first.] Prepare your work outside and get it ready for yourself in the field; and afterward build your house and establish a home.
God won’t give you more than you can handle…
Most Christians see this above comment in regards handling stress and struggles in every day life. And because of their consumer mindset, “What can I buy?”, they don’t see what God has truly called them to do, “What can I produce that I can sell?” God has called us to be co-creators with Him in creating wealth and making money for His Kingdom.
Another blog post, “Christian Business and the Ministry of Wealth Creation” says the same thing.
God is not going to give you more wealth until you have learned to handle, maturely, the wealth you currently have. If you can’t handle $40,000 a year His way, He’s not going to give you $400,000 or $4,000,000 to spend! When you watch what happens to lottery winners, nearly ALL of them go broke after a number of years. But astutely, one lottery winner stated it correctly, “If you’re not disciplined, you will go broke. I don’t care how much money you have.”
…yet God prospered Job and others with more money
After Job passed his test by God, and his friend failed their test, God blessed Job twofold (Job 42:10) for him trusting God for his wealth, not himself. “Are there wealthy people in the bible?” has more examples of wealthy people, but they had learned to handle it, learning the necessary skills to manage, or be a steward, of what God has blessed them with.
Wealth starts here:
3 John 2 Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers (emphasis added)
The sequence God gives is this: Your soul prospers FIRST before anything else does.
What does creating wealth God’s way look like today? Check out the Barnhart Crane and Rigging company and what good stewardship of the resources God has given them looks like that we can aspire to do the same.
So do you want to have $1,000,000? Then have a $1,000,000 soul combined with having producer mindset first!
